Hawaiʻi Handweavers' Hui's "Surrounded by Water" opens Aug 2 at Downtown Art Center
“Surrounded by Water,” a juried exhibition presented by the Hawaiʻi Handweavers’ Hui and The Glass Fusion Collective, opens August 2 at the Downtown Art Center, 1041 Nuʻuanu Ave., 2nd floor.
Handwoven textiles and fused glass objects inspired by the effect of water on individuals, our island communities and the world at large is the focus of the show which runs until Aug. 19.
Juror for the show is Stacie Robinson, a ceramicist and research ecologist with NOAA’s Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program. “I dwell in a unique space at the intersection of art and science. A love of nature and the marine environment is the core that unites these seemingly disparate foci.”
The public is invited to the opening reception on Aug. 4, 5 to 8 pm to meet the artists, enjoy live piano music and view the presentation of awards. In addition, Honolulu City Councilman Calvin Say will present a proclamation to the Hawaiʻi Handweavers’ Hui commemorating its 70 anniversary this year.
The Hawaiʻi Handweavers’ Hui is a non profit dedicated to encouraging and promoting excellence in hand weaving by bringing together weavers, spinners, dyers, fiber artists and educators who share the joy and passion of the fiber arts. Since 2021, the Hui has offered a wide array of fiber arts classes in its studio adjacent to the Downtown Art Center.
Downtown Art Center is open Tuesdays to Sundays, 11 am to 6 pm. Additionally, award winning textile pieces from the exhibit and pieces by Big Island weavers will be on display at Kahilu Theatre, August 24 to October 29, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 10 am to 2 pm and during theatre shows.
