Traditionally used in decorating washi to cover books or embellish scrolls, the suminagashi technique also works on silk and cotton.

Gail-White has taught suminagashi and Western marbling for over 30 years. Most notably, her works have been exhibited at International Marbling Conferences, Fiber Art juried exhibits in Hawaii, The Textile Museum in Seoul, Korea, The Craft Museum in San Francisco, and in other mainland cities.

Supply Fee: $15 includes samples of washi (handmade Japanese paper), silks, and cottons. A detailed supply list will be emailed to students after enrollment.   A detailed supply list will be emailed to students after enrollment.

Indigo Blue Basics
9:00-11:00 am
Ann Asakura
Class Fee: $40

Indigo dyeing is universal. European, African and Asian cultures harnessed the power of this colorfast dye. Indigo blue fabrics clothed Tuareg tribesmen, gold rush miners, and Japanese firefighters. Indigo blue was slept on and in its final raggedy state was stitched and woven together into rag slippers, back packs, and horse reins. Learn how to work with this soluble vat dye, its unique chemical structure, and visible color changes. Create patterns of blue and white with simple resist methods.

Asakura has harvested indigo growing in her former Mililani backyard, studied with Japan’s National Folk Treasures, and, 40 years later, is still captivated by indigo’s magic.

Supply fee: $15 covers the vat’s components (pre-reduced indigo powder and reducing agents) and a 100 percent cotton tenugui hand towel. A detailed supply list will be emailed to students after enrollment.
